Taiwan loses to Japan in Asia Professional Baseball tourney

Taiwan's team in the Asia Professional Baseball Championship thanks the crowd on Saturday at Tokyo Dome in Tokyo.

Tokyo, Nov. 18 (CNA) Taiwan lost to Japan 8-2 in the last game of the preliminary round in the Asia Professional Baseball Championship in Tokyo Saturday, failing to secure a spot in the final of the three-team tournament.

Japanese outfielder Tonosaki Shuta hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning after two outs giving Japan a 1-0 lead.

The Japanese nine scored another two runs in the fifth inning, three runs in the seventh inning and one run in each of the eighth and ninth innings.

Taiwanese Chu Yu-hsien (朱育賢) fought back with a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving Taiwan its first run of the game.

Chen Tzu-hao (陳子豪) scored the second run for Taiwan in the same inning after Chen Chieh-hsien (陳傑憲) was hit by pitch when he was at bat with the bases loaded.

The tournament features mostly younger professional players representing Taiwan, Japan and South Korea. The three countries played round robin matches with the two best teams to advance to the final.

Japan beat South Korea 8-7 in the opening game of the tournament on Thursday and Taiwan lost to South Korea 1-0 on Friday.

South Korea and Japan will vie for the title of the tournament in the final on Sunday.
