Taipei, June 27 (CNA) Taiwan congratulates Mohamed Morsi on his victory in Egypt's presidential election, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday.

"The Republic of China (Taiwan) also expresses respect for the people of Egypt for their determination in the pursuit of democracy," according to a statement released by the ministry.

Taiwan hopes the African country can continue its path toward prosperity and democracy, it added.

The statement came after Egypt's electoral commission announced Islamist Mohamed Morsi as the country's new president on June 24.

Morsi belongs to the Muslim Brotherhood, a group whose members were reportedly persecuted under former President Hosni Mubarak's rule.

The presidential election was the first since the fall of Mubarak, who was forced from the presidency in a revolution last year. He served as the president of Egypt for about three decades from 1981 to 2011.
