Call for constitutional protection of animal rights

In Taiwan, pigs are raised to gigantic sizes each year for a religious festival, nonnative animals are released into foreign habitats with devastating consequences in Buddhist "mercy releases", and turtles are confined to small spaces to be kept as auspicious symbols. These types of animal abuse have long troubled animal rights advocates, who are now pushing for enshrining the protection of animals in Taiwan's Constitution. Animal rights advocates believe this is the best way to prioritize animals and animal protection above other interests such as religious beliefs. But it's not easy to amend the Constitution.
