OLYMPICS/Team Taiwan at the Tokyo Olympics, Aug. 1
Taiwan won three medals at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday, including a silver in badminton, a silver in the men's pommel horse, and a bronze in golf.
After her unsuccessful campaign at the 2012 London Games and the 2016 Rio Olympics, world No. 1 badminton player Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) finally won her first Olympic medal in Tokyo, a silver after she lost the gold medal match to Chen Yufei (陳雨菲) of China.
Gymnast Lee Chih-kai (李智凱), meanwhile, ended an eventful week with a silver medal in the men's pommel horse event, Taiwan's first in an Olympic gymnastics competition.
Lee qualified for the final with the highest score last Monday, but fell during his routine on the pommel horse during the men's all-around competition last Wednesday, repeating his mishap in the final at the 2016 Rio Games.
British gymnast Max Whitlock, the gold medalist at the Rio Games, took home another gold in the men's pommel horse.
In his second Summer Games appearance, golfer Pan Cheng-tsung (潘政琮), who ranks as the world No. 208, managed to finish in a shared third place after four days in the men's competition.
He went into a playoff with six other players and won a bronze medal, along with world No. 3 Collin Morikawa of the United States, who was this year's winner of the Open tournament in the United Kingdom, and No. 13 Irish player Rory McIlroy.
World No. 5 American Xander Schauffele won the gold medal.
Taiwan's Hsu Wei-ling (徐薇淩) and Lee Min (李旻) will begin in the women's golf competition on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, boxer Huang Hsiao-wen (黃筱雯) is set to win another medal for Taiwan, after advancing to the semifinals of the women's flyweight category by overpowering Serbia's Nina Radovanovic in the quarterfinals.
After winning a bronze medal in the mixed doubles, the six Taiwanese table tennis players in Tokyo began the men's and women's team events on Sunday.
The men's team, led by five-time Olympian Chuang Chih-yuan (莊智淵), crushed their Croatian rivals 3-0 to reach the quarterfinals.
The women's team also won 3-0 in their matches against the United States to advance to the next round.
Both Taiwan teams are scheduled to compete Tuesday in that round.
Meanwhile, 12 Taiwanese athletes in the Olympic team returned home Sunday, including the silver medalist men's archery team; sprinter Hsieh Hsi-en, who made her Olympic debut in Tokyo; and two-time Olympian rower Huang Yi-ting (黃義婷).
"This not the end, but rather a new beginning," said 27-year-old silver medalist archer Wei Chun-heng (魏均珩) at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.
As of Sunday, Taiwan had won 10 medals -- two gold, four silver and four bronze medals -- at the Tokyo Games.
