Taipei, July 15 (CNA) Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital posted the highest overall profit among Taiwan's 240 hospitals in 2024, recording a surplus of NT$3.726 billion (US$115.87 million), according to a report released Wednesday by the National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA).

The Taoyuan-based hospital retained the top spot for the ninth consecutive year, supported in part by dividend income, NHIA Chief Secretary Liu Lin-yi (劉林義) said.

Its profit fell from NT$5.631 billion in 2023, mainly because dividend income declined by about NT$1.8 billion, Liu added.

Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital ranked second with NT$2.865 billion in profit, followed by China Medical University Hospital (CMUH) at NT$2.389 billion, Taipei Veterans General Hospital at NT$2.04 billion, and Taichung Veterans General Hospital (TCVGH) at NT$1.901 billion.

Rounding out the top 10 were Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital (KMUH), National Taiwan University Hospital, National Cheng Kung University Hospital, Taoyuan Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and Chung Shan Medical University Hospital.

According to the report, about 90 percent of Taiwan's 240 hospitals recorded profits in 2024, while the remaining 10 percent posted losses.

However, when only healthcare service operations were considered, 75 percent of hospitals reported operating profits, while 25 percent incurred losses.

CMUH recorded the highest profit from healthcare services alone for the 11th consecutive year, earning NT$1.78 billion, followed by KMUH with NT$1.336 billion and TCVGH with NT$1.003 billion, the report said.

Broken down by hospital level, 20 of Taiwan's 22 medical centers reported operating profits from healthcare services, while two posted losses. Among regional hospitals, 65 (nearly 80 percent) recorded profits and 18 losses. Of district hospitals, 89 (about 70 percent) were profitable, while 41 reported losses.

Kaohsiung Medical University Gangshan Hospital posted the largest operating loss from healthcare services at NT$676 million, followed by the Longquan Branch of Pingtung Veterans General Hospital at NT$369 million, according to the report.

Liu said both hospitals are relatively new and faced higher start-up and operating costs.
