Taipei, July 27 (CNA) Taiwanese high school students won one gold and three silver medals at the 2025 International Biology Olympiad in Quezon City, Philippines, with all four team members earning awards.

At the award ceremony Saturday evening, Chen Chun-ying (陳俊穎) from Taipei Municipal Chien Kuo High School received a gold medal, while Lin Po-chen (林柏辰) from the Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University and Hung Tzu-chin (洪子芩) from Taipei First Girls High School each earned a silver.

Kuo Che-yu (郭哲聿) from Chien Kuo High School, who also won a silver medal, was not present at the ceremony.

Chen told CNA he achieved good results by applying techniques taught by his teachers and practicing past exam questions, despite the competition's challenging theoretical and practical tests.

Lin, meanwhile, said his experience in the Philippines was positive, noting that the country's culture and the friendliness of its people reminded him of Taiwan.

Hung said she had learned a lot from the experience and would continue to work hard.

Students who win gold, silver, or bronze medals in international Olympiads receive cash prizes of NT$200,000 (US$6,776), NT$100,000, and NT$50,000, respectively. They are also eligible for direct admission to related university programs or may be recommended for other fields of study.

More than 300 students from nearly 80 countries and regions took part in the 36th International Biology Olympiad, held July 20-27, according to the organizers.
