Taipei, April 23 (CNA) Sorghum liquor produced by Taiwan's Matsu Liquor Factory Industry Co., Ltd. has gained recognition at several international spirits competitions in recent years, with one kaoliang product with alcohol content of 58 percent winning the Grand Gold Quality Award at Monde Selection 2019 in Brussels.

Meanwhile, another product, Tongyung Ta Chu Liquor, has been granted the Gold Award at Monde Selection.

Created in 1961, Monde Selection is an annual non-competitive award open to food, drinks and cosmetics. It is run by the Brussels-based International Institute for Quality Selections.

It is a globally prestigious competition that gathers selected high-quality product entries from all parts of the world and then investigates the products for their quality and safety. The tested products may be awarded a variety of medals.

Matsu kaoliang products have continued to enjoy international acclaim, having won awards at the 2017, 2018 and 2019 at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, one of the world's most respected organizations.

At Monde Selection 2018, two products from the Matsu liquor company took Grand Gold Quality Awards, while two others won Gold Medals.

Liu Chiu-ming (劉九銘), CEO of the local distiller, said that liquor from the Matsu factory has been growing in popularity at home and abroad, thanks to the clement weather and water quality, and the way the liquor is produced.

Despite producing only a limited variety of alcohol, the distillery has higher-than-average quality requirements, Liu said, adding that it has made great efforts to upgrade its production process, including improving the quality of its raw materials, storage and conditioning, in order to enhance the quality of its products.
