Taipei, Oct. 19 (CNA) The weather in northern Taiwan will remain cool and rainy Friday and into Saturday due to northeasterly winds, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Northern and eastern Taiwan, as well as mountainous areas in the central areas, can expect rain on Friday, while the rest of the country will see sporadic showers, CWB forecaster Lin Po-tung (林柏東) said.

Under the influence of the northeasterly winds, temperatures in northern Taiwan, Yilan and Hualien will rise to no more than 25 degrees Celsius in the day, with nighttime lows falling to 19 degrees in some parts, Lin said.

In Taitung on the east coast and in central and southern Taiwan, daytime highs of 30 degrees can be expected, he said.

That weather pattern will continue until Saturday, when the northeasterly winds are expected to weaken, Lin said, adding that sunny skies and warmer temperatures are likely on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Wu Der-romg (吳德榮), a professor at National Central University's Department of Atmospheric Sciences, forecast that a tropical disturbance will form near Guam sometime around Oct. 25.

The system will move north toward Japan and is unlikely to affect Taiwan, Wu said.
