Taipei, Aug. 13 (CNA) Taipei has so far experienced a record eight days of high temperatures above 37 degrees Celsius (98 degrees Fahrenheit) in August, and more are forecast, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) data showed Sunday.

A 37.2-degree temperature reading was measured by the city's weather station at 12:43 p.m. Sunday, marking the eighth time this month when the mercury hits above 37 degrees, a monthly record since 1897, when the weather bureau began to record temperatures, said former CWB forecaster Wu Der-rong (吳德榮), who now teaches at National Central University.

Due to a continental tropical air mass that is moving into the East China Sea, temperature in the greater Taipei area is forecast to reach as high as 38 degrees from Monday through Wednesday, he said.

According to CWB forecaster Yen Tseng-hsi (顏增璽), the city had seen 77 days of temperatures above 35 degrees last summer.

So far this summer, the city has recorded 43 days of high temperatures above 35 degrees, he said.
