Foreign foundation donates money to Taichung food bank

Taichung, Aug. 30 (CNA) The Aurora Light Foundation, aSwitzerland-based foundation, presented US$40,000 to the TaichungTa-tun Food Bank Monday, a donation that will help approximately4,000 households in central Taiwan, according to the food bank'sfounder.

It was the first donation ever received by the food bank fromoverseas, said the Department of Social Affairs of the Taichung CityGovernment, which established the organization in 2009 to aid thepoor and needy.

The food bank had been experiencing a decrease in donations sincelast year and was faced with a money shortage after this year'sChinese New Year, said department Director Chang Guo-huei.

The chief executive of Aurora Light Foundation in Asia, HuangShih-ming, allocated the US$40,000 after hearing about the foodbank's financial difficulties and reporting the issue to thefoundation's headquarters.

Aurora Light Foundation is a charitable organization dedicated toassisting any country or organization in need, said Huang, addingthat other cities in Taiwan are also eligible to apply for funding.

During the donation ceremony, Andrew Johnson, founder of AuroraLight Foundation, expressed hope to Taichung Mayor Jason Hu that themoney will help the financially under-privileged, to which Huresponded that the food bank will indeed use the money to help thedisadvantaged.

Chang noted that the fund will be distributed in fourinstallments before June 2011.
