Spanish TV crew impressed by Taiwan's 24-hour bookstores

Taipei, July 19 (CNA) The production crew of a Spanish TV travel show said Thursday they were impressed by the convenience of life in Taiwan, especially the fact that some bookstores are open around the clock.

The production crew of the popular travel show "Spaniards in the World" mentioned in particular Taiwan's 24-hour Eslite bookstores, according to Iker Izquierdo, who was the crew's tour guide for a day before its departure for Spain.

"There are no bookstores in Spain that stay opened 24 hours. If Spaniards do not go to sleep at night, they will do something else rather than visit a bookstore," said Izquierdo who is also a program host at Radio Taiwan International.

During the crew's seven-day shoot in Taiwan, they were taken on tours of the country's major tourist spots by six Spanish nationals who live and work in Taiwan.

The places they visited included Taroko Gorge in the eastern county of Hualien and Confucius Temple in Tainan County, south Taiwan.

The members of the TV crew particularly noticed differences between Taiwanese and Chinese people, said Lucia Mbomio, the host of the travel program.

Taiwanese are friendly and civic-minded, said Mbomio, who has led the crew on visits to Beijing and Shanghai over the years.

During the shoot in Taiwan, the crew visited the landmark Taipei 101 skyscraper and Fuerte Santo Domingo, which was built by the Spanish in 1629 in Tamsui on the northwestern coast of the country.

They also went to Miaoli in northern Taiwan, where Spanish artist Salvador Marco lives. Marco moved to Taiwan after participating in a driftwood sculpture program that was held after Typhoon Morakot in 2009.

The crew members also sampled Taiwanese foods, which they said are very similar to Spanish cuisine, especially fried rice and fried oysters, said Mbomio, who tried out palm reading during a visit to Longshan Temple in Taipei.

The 50-minute travel episode is scheduled to be broadcast in late September in 54 countries around the world to an audience of over 3.5 million.

The long-running program, produced by Spanish Radio and Television Co., visits new immigrants in different countries around the world to tell the stories of Spaniards who live there.
