Taipei, Feb. 15 (CNA) Deputy Transportation Minister Yeh Kuang-shih, who will soon take over as head of the ministry, visited Taitung earlier in the week to examine the transportation situation in eastern Taiwan.

Yeh has vowed to make the improvement of transportation in eastern Taiwan a priority, Taitung County Council Speaker Yao Ching-ling told CNA Friday.

Yeh, who arrived in Taitung Feb. 12, visited the Taitung Railway Station to examine work to ease the Lunar New Year travel rush.

He also met with Yao Ching-ling and Yao Eng-chi, a senior adviser to the president, to discuss plans to improve transportation in the eastern county.

Traveling home for the holidays is an ordeal for residents of eastern Taiwan because of the difficulty of getting train seats.

This year, 410,000 eastern line train tickets for the Lunar New Year holiday were snapped up within an hour of going on sale.

Yao Ching-ling said she hopes the south-link line can soon be electrified, and that the line, along with the entire eastern line, can also be upgraded from a single track system to a double track system.
