
Taipei, Aug. 28 (CNA) Taiwan on Sunday reported 26,765 new cases of COVID-19 and 31 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The deceased ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but two suffered from chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, while 14 had not been vaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.
Also on Sunday, the CECC reported 23 COVID-19 cases newly classified as severe and 68 newly classified as moderate.
Of the 5,153,493 domestically transmitted cases recorded in Taiwan this year, 10,439 have been classified as severe infections and 13,217 as moderate, accounting for 0.20 percent and 0.26 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of Aug. 27.
Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases on Sunday, with 5,695, followed by Taipei with 3,273 and Taichung with 3,080.
Taoyuan had 2,928 new cases, Kaohsiung 2,071, Tainan 1,684, Changhua 1,117, Hsinchu City 825, Hsinchu County 810, Miaoli 678, Pingtung 624, and Yilan 596.
Yunlin had 533 cases, Hualien 508, Keelung 503, Chiayi County 431, Nantou 350, Chiayi City 265, Taitung 239, Penghu 117, Kinmen 108, and the Matsu Islands 15, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 5,221,585 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 5,194,517 domestic cases.
With the 31 deaths reported Sunday, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 9,844.
