After United States bombers dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in early August 1945, Japanese Emperor Hirohito officially surrendered to the Allies on August 15. The official surrender was signed aboard an American battleship on September 2, 1945, and Japanese troops in China formally surrendered in Nanjing on September 9, 1945.
