Heavy, extremely heavy rain warning issued for 12 cities, counties

Taipei, June 14 (CNA) Heavy or extremely heavy rain warnings have been issued for 12 cities and counties around Taiwan as the island comes under the influence of a strengthening air convection system, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Thursday.

The extremely heavy rain warning is effective in Tainan, Kaohsiung, Taitung County and Pingtung County, the CWB said.

Meanwhile, heavy rain warnings have been issued for Yilan County, Taichung, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County and City, Penghu County and Hualien County.

According to the bureau, extremely heavy rain means 200mm of rain in 24 hours, or 100mm of rain in three hours, while heavy rain denotes 80mm of rain in 24 hours, or 40mm of rain in three hours.

Jiadung Township in Pingtung County has been inundated with more than 190mm of rainfall in the last 12 hours, while other parts of Pingtung and Taitung County have also seen more than 100mm of rainfall during the same period, the CWB said.

The rain is not expected to ease until June 17, the CWB said.
