Taipei, May 25 (CNA) The jackpot for Taiwan's Grand Lottery is expected to increase to NT$720 million (US$24.08 million) after 22 draws without a winner, Taiwan Lottery Corp. (TLC) said Friday.

The next Grand Lottery draw is scheduled for Friday evening and TLC, which operates Taiwan's lottery business, said prize money is expected to hit the ninth highest in Grand Lottery history.

The Grand Lottery jackpot has exceeded NT$1 billion four times, but in those cases, more than one winner split the pot.

The highest Grand Lottery prize of NT$1.822 billion came on Feb. 8, 2011, and was shared by five winners, TLC said. The second highest was on Dec. 4, 2007 at NT$1.27 billion, followed by NT$1.23 billion on Feb. 17, 2012, according to TLC.

If one person wins the grand prize, it would be the Grand Lottery's third highest payout to a single winner since it was launched in 2004, TLC said.

The biggest lottery jackpot won by a single winner was NT$937 million on June 9, 2009. The second highest payout was NT$726 million, awarded on Feb. 23, 2007.

To win, lottery ticket holders have to pick six from a total of 49 numbers. TLC holds two draws every week, one on Tuesday, the other on Friday.

Sources from lottery outlets said a lot of people, eyeing the growing jackpot, have been flocking to outlets around the country after the Grand Lottery failed to produce a winner Tuesday.

TLC said the size of the jackpot is expected to rise by NT$270 million on Friday, pushing the total to NT$720 million.

It will be the fourth consecutive draw for the Grand Lottery in which outlets have taken in more than NT$200 million in one single day, TLC said.

If the jackpot reaches NT$720 million as expected, the second prize will receive in excess of NT$10 million, TLC said.
