Taipei, June 16 (CNA) The Kinmen County Transportation and Tourism Bureau said Saturday that a night ferry service between Taiwan's outlying island of Kinmen and China's Xiamen would be launchedon a trial basis the following day.
Yang Zhen-wu, director of the bureau, will travel on the ferry's maiden voyage from Kinmen to Xiamen's Dongdu Harbor, while another ferry will depart from there to Kinmen's Shueitou Pier.
Over 85 people on both sides have made reservations to takethe ferries, the bureau said.
The journey, which normally takes one hour during the daylight hours, will take 1.5 hours at night, the bureau said.
The trial service extends the last departure from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., the bureau said, adding that if it is well-received, more night ferries will be added on other routes.
The bureau said ferry passenger loads between three ports in China's Fujian Province and the two Taiwan-controlled islands of Kinmen and Matsu rose by over 90,000 in 2010 to 1.47 million last year.
The number is expected to climb to a new record high this year, it added.
