Tainan police officer killed in operation to net drug lord

Taipei, April 12 (CNA) A police officer was fatally wounded Thursday in a shootout during an operation to catch a wanted drug lord in southern Taiwan's Tainan City.

Lin Hung-hsing, a squad leader at the Tainan City Police Department, was shot in the chest during the operation that ended with the arrest of the criminal.

Paramedics rushed Lin to the Chi Mei Medical Center, but he died a short time later.

Lin is survived by his wife and two children.

Chen Tzu-jing, chief of the department, expressed sorrow over the incident, saying that Lin was shot just as he was about to put on a bulletproof vest.
