Taipei, July 26 (CNA) The Environmental Protection Administration(EPA) on Monday unveiled its plan to phase out the use of asbestoswithin a decade.
Lin Chien-hui, director of the EPA's Department of EnvironmentalSanitation and Toxic Substance Management, said that in considerationof the time needed to deal with the ban, it will be carried out intwo stages.
Starting July 1, 2015, asbestos will no longer be used as asealing material in construction, and starting July 1, 2020, it willbe banned for use in tiles, lining and extruded cement panels.
Lin said asbestos is commonly used in construction and brakelinings, but the inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause seriousillnesses, including lung cancer.
