Former Premier Lai Ching-te (賴清德) of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said Friday that the party's presidential nominee should be decided by a primary amid reports that pro-Taiwan independence groups have expressed hope that Lai will step back and allow President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) to run unopposed.
