President Tsai to leave for Paraguay, Belize Sunday

Taipei, Aug. 9 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) will embark Sunday on a nine-day overseas trip, which will take her to two of Taiwan's diplomatic allies, Paraguay and Belize, the Presidential Office said Thursday.

During her visit to Paraguay Aug. 14-16, the president will attend the inauguration of President-elect Mario Abdo Benitez on Aug 15. She will also hold talks with Abdo Benitez and outgoing President Horacio Cartes.

Tsai will transit in the United States -- Los Angeles on the first leg of the journey and Houston on the return trip, according to the office.

Tsai is scheduled to arrive in Los Angeles around noon Aug. 12 (local time) and depart for Paraguay the next day. She will stopover for more than 24 hours in both U.S. cities, according to the president's itinerary.

Presidential Office Secretary-General Chen Chu (陳菊) will accompany Tsai on the flight to Los Angeles where she will start a tour of five U.S. cities, including San Francisco, Phoenix, Salt Lake and Houston.

Chen will join Tsai in Houston when the president stops there on the return journey.

During her visit to the United States, Chen will thank overseas Taiwanese for their support, brief them on the results of the government's various reform programs and listen to their opinions, according to the Presidential Office.

After her scheduled arrival in Paraguay Aug. 14, Tsai and outgoing President Horacio Cartes will speak at a ceremony marking the opening of a technological university jointly founded by Taiwan and Paraguay.

She will also witness the donation of Acer tablet computers to the school before meeting with President-elect Mario Abdo Benitez later that day.

On Aug. 15, Tsai will attend the inauguration of the Paraguayan president-elect during which she is expected to meet with the heads of state of many countries.

Later that day, she will hold talks with delegations from Taiwan's diplomatic allies and other countries friendly to Taiwan.

On Aug. 16, Tsai will head to Belize for a three-day visit, during which she will be decorated by Governor-General Colville Young and visit Prime Minister Dean Barrow.

In Belize, Tsai will give a speech to parliament, visit Taiwan's embassy, technical vocational schools, a technical mission, cultural sites and attend a Taiwan scholarship presentation ceremony, according to the president's itinerary.

Tsai is scheduled to leave Belize on Aug. 18 (local time) before heading to Houston for a nearly 27-hour stopover.

She is slated to arrive in Taiwan late on Aug. 20.

It will be President Tsai's fourth overseas trip since she took office in 2016.

Over the past two years, she has made state visits to Panama, Paraguay, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, the Solomon Islands, and eSwatini.

Her transit stops have all been on U.S. territory: Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, San Francisco, Honolulu and Guam.
