Taipei, May. 27 (CNA) Marco Vinicio Cerezo Arevalo, secretary-general of the Central America Integration System (SICA), arrived Taiwan on Sunday for a five-day-trip to observe the country's political and economic development, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced that day.

SICA is a regional organization that aims to promote sustainable development in Central America through political, economic, social, cultural and ecological integration. Taiwan has become an observer of SICA since 2002.

During his stay in Taiwan, Cerezo, who took up the post in June 2017, will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) and is scheduled to attend a banquet hosted by Vice Foreign Minister Jose Maria Liu (劉德立), according to a MOFA statement.

The three-man delegation will also call at several government units to learn about Taiwan's development in various fields as a reference for the future operation of the SICA, it said.

A well-regarded politician in Central America region, Cerezo had served as president of Guatemala from January 14, 1986 to January 14, 1991.

During his presidency, Cerezo helped to hold two important conferences on Central American integration in Esquipulas, leading to the signing of two Esquipulas Peace Agreements, an important milestone in re-establishing peace in the region, according to MOFA.
