Taipei, May 20 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou said Sunday that as chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT) he could ensure smooth cooperation between the ruling party and government, and help the Cabinet carry out policies.
At a news conference held shortly after his inauguration for a second term in office, Ma said the KMT could help promote Cabinet policies and that a platform could be established to improve communication between the Cabinet and KMT lawmakers.
Ma said he has not done a good job as KMT chairman, but "at this stage, I believe it is better to serve concurrently as KMT chairman than to give up the post."
Asked if his decision making process involved just a small group of people, Ma said this was not the case.
For example, the issue of whether to allow the importation of U.S. beef containing residues of the drug ractopamine was discussed with the Cabinet and KMT lawmakers after experts gave their opinions, he said.
As for the decision to raise fuel and electricity prices, Ma said it was discussed with then Vice President Vincent Siew and the relevant ministries.
"I do not make decisions or act alone," Ma said.
He said he will spend more time communicating with KMT lawmakers and as far as possible, will take the public's views into consideration.
