Taipei, Nov. 13 (CNA) South Korean dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chipmaker SK Hynix Inc. will soon become the third largest integrated circuit supplier in the world, replacing Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), according market advisory firm IC Insights Inc.

In a research report posted on its website on Monday, IC Insights said Hynix is expected to post US$37.73 billion in sales for 2018, an annual increase of 41 percent.

That figure will move Hynix up on spot to third place among global IC suppliers, displacing TSMC, said the California-based market advisory firm.

Hynix's 2018 sales growth is also expected to be the strongest among the world's IC suppliers, IC Insights said.

The report forecast TSMC 2018 sales at US$34.21 billion, a 6 percent annual increase, which will put the company in fourth place globally.

According to the report, the combined sales of the top 15 IC suppliers in the world are expected to hit US$381.16 billion, up 18 percent from a year earlier.

Among the top 15 firms, seven are based in the United States, three in Europe, two in South Korea, two in Japan and one in Taiwan.

Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea is expected to retain the top spot in 2018, with a forecast 26 percent annual increase in sales to US$83.26 billion, followed by Intel Corp. of the United States with a forecast sales growth of 14 percent to US$70.15 billion, according to the advisory firm.

U.S.-based DRAM maker Micron Technology Inc. is expected to be in fifth place with its sales forecast to rise 33 percent to US$31.81 billion, followed by American IC designers Broadcom Inc. with estimated sales of US$18.46 billion and Qualcomm Inc. with forecast sales of US$16.48 billion, IC Insights said.
