Taipei, June 25 (CNA) Taiwanese singer Julia Peng (彭佳慧) edged out five other nominees to take home the Best Mandarin Female Singer award for her album "Darling" (大齡女子) at the 27th Golden Melody Awards in Taipei Saturday.

It was the first time that Peng was nominated for the award.

"I've waited for this for 20 years. Thank you judges," the 44-year-old singer said in her acceptance speech.

The tearful singer thanked her family, the people who helped produce her albums over the past two decades, and her fans who have stuck by her side over the years.

Peng, known for her powerful vocals, started her music career singing in pubs in the 1990s. She has since released over a dozen albums.

Peng was competing against Taiwan's A-mei (張惠妹) and Peggy Hsu (許哲珮), Singaporean singer-songwriter Tanya Chua (蔡健雅), and Huang Qishan (小霞) and Su Yunying (蘇運瑩) of China.
