DPP wins presidency but loses majority in Legislature

Taiwan's vice president, Lai Ching-te has won Taiwan's presidential election, giving the Democratic Progressive Party an unprecedented third term running the country. In a three-way race, Lai received 40 percent of the vote, topping his closest rival by 6.6 percentage points. Lai's victory will likely mean continued frosty relations between Taiwan and China that have characterized the past eight years under President Tsai Ing-wen.
