Taipei, Oct. 23 (CNA) Heavy rain and cool temperatures are expected to continue in northern Taiwan on Thursday and into the three-day weekend, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).

On Thursday, the CWA issued heavy to extremely heavy rain advisories for Yilan, New Taipei, and mountainous areas of Taipei City, citing the convergent effects of seasonal northeasterly winds and a low-pressure system.

The CWA also warned of heavy rain in Keelung City, but lifted that advisory for Taoyuan and Hualien County, saying they were likely to experience only short, sporadic showers on Thursday.

Noting that northern and northeastern Taiwan have been deluged by nonstop rain over the past few days, the CWA advised the public to be on the alert for potential flooding. People in mountainous regions should also watch out for landslides, mudslides, and swollen rivers and streams, the CWA warned.

The rainy conditions in northern Taiwan are expected to continue over the long weekend -- which includes a day off on Friday ahead of Taiwan Retrocession Day on Oct. 25 -- and through to next Wednesday, the CWA said.

Meanwhile, temperatures on Thursday will drop to 21 to 26 degrees Celsius in northern Taiwan, while other parts of the country will see lows of 23 to 25 degrees and highs of 28 to 32 degrees, according to the CWA.

From Friday to next Wednesday, highs in northern Taiwan, Hualien and Taitung County will range between 26 and 31 degrees, while Yilan will see highs of 24 to 26 degrees, the CWA said.

Over that same period, central and southern Taiwan can expect highs of 31 to 33 degrees, the CWA said.
