Foam footwear stuck in escalator causes injury in Xinpu Metro Station

New Taipei, Oct. 11 (CNA) Four individuals on an escalator in New Taipei's Xinpu Metro Station were injured after a foam shoe one passenger was wearing became stuck in an escalator, according to New Taipei City Fire Department on Saturday.

The department explained that the incident took place at around 12:30 p.m. on an escalator towards Exit 5 of the metro station.

According to New Taipei City Police Department's Haishan Precinct, the incident occurred when a beige-colored foam shoe became stuck at the bottom of an escalator, causing it to malfunction, shake intensely and stop.

The malfunction also caused several people on the escalator to fall, injuring four.

The police said details of the malfunction will have to be further investigated by the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation, adding that the escalator in question is currently out of service.

Of the four individuals who sustained injuries, two voluntarily left following the incident while one other received on-site medical attention but declined to seek further treatment at a medical facility.

One woman who sprained her wrist during the accident was transferred to the Ministry of Health and Welfare's Taipei Hospital.
