Taipei, March 8 (CNA) The ridership of Taipei Metro topped 14 billion people Saturday morning, the Taipei Rapid Transit Corp. (TRTC) announced that day.

The 14 billionth passenger will receive a free one-year pass for the Taipei Metro, while the five passengers who enter the metro immediately before and after them will each receive a one-month TPASS covering Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan and Keelung City, the company said in a news statement.

The 14 billionth passenger entered Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center station at 10:18 a.m. and got off at Dahu Park station, the company said.

The Taipei Metro saw its 13 billionth passenger in November 2023, the company noted.

The first MRT line to open was the Muzha Line in 1996, which is now part of the extended and renamed Wenhu Line.

TRTC encouraged members of the public to keep using environmentally-friendly methods of transport and help to reduce carbon emissions.
