
Taipei, Aug. 25 (CNA) Taiwan on Thursday reported 27,275 new cases of COVID-19 and 37 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The deceased ranged in age from their 30s to their 90s. All except three suffered from chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, while 18 had not been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.
Also on Thursday, the CECC reported 35 COVID-19 cases newly classified as severe and 65 newly classified as moderate.
MIS-C cases
Among the severe cases were three young patients under the age of 13 who were diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), the CECC said.
All three did not have a history of chronic illnesses, the CECC said, adding that they had recently been discharged from hospital after their conditions improved.
Of the 5,074,628 domestically transmitted cases recorded in Taiwan this year, 10,308 have been classified as severe infections and 12,964 as moderate, accounting for 0.20 percent and 0.26 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of Aug. 24.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases on Thursday, with 5,892, followed by Taipei with 3,444 and Taichung with 2,995.
Taoyuan had 2,935 new cases, Kaohsiung 2,138, Tainan 1,765, Changhua 1,069, Hsinchu County 820, Miaoli 716, Hsinchu City 713, Pingtung 635, Yunlin 612, Yilan 582, Hualien 531, Keelung 526, and Chiayi County 423.
Nantou reported 387 cases, Taitung 251, Chiayi City 242, Penghu 158, Kinmen 126, and the Matsu Islands seven, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 5,142,279 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020. Of those, 5,116,153 have been classified as domestically transmitted, while the remainder were contracted abroad.
With the 37 deaths reported Thursday, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 9,728.
