CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 23,669 new COVID-19 cases, 18 deaths

Taipei, Aug. 9 (CNA) Taiwan reported 23,669 new cases of COVID-19, all but 211 of which were domestic infections, and 18 deaths from the disease on Tuesday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The death toll was Taiwan's lowest since May 12, which ranged in age from 8 months to over 90, the CECC said at a press briefing.

Severe, moderate cases

All but the youngest fatality, an 8-month-old boy, suffered from chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, the CECC said.

The boy, who was unvaccinated, died of pneumonia, sepsis, and other COVID-19 complications after contracting the disease, the CECC said.

Also on Tuesday, the CECC reported 13 new severe COVID-19 cases and 21 moderate infections.

Of the 4,717,651 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 9,761 have been classified as severe infections and 12,073 as moderate, accounting for 0.21 percent and 0.26 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of Aug. 8.

In all other cases, the infected persons were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, the CECC said.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases on Tuesday, with 4,135, followed by Taichung with 3,063 and Taipei with 2,617.

Kaohsiung reported 2,248 new cases, Taoyuan 2,151, Tainan 1,834, Changhua County 1,133, Miaoli County 719, Yunlin County 712, Pingtung County 683, Hsinchu County 590, Hsinchu City 512, Yilan County 490, and Chiayi County 489.

Nantou County reported 416 cases, Hualien County 411, Keelung 330, Chiayi City 290, Taitung County 280, Penghu County 192, Kinmen County 155, and the Matsu islands eight cases, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 4,777,903 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 4,755,677 domestic infections.

With the 18 deaths reported Tuesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 9,273.
