Former president Ma to visit Hong Kong
Taipei, June 1 (CNA) Former President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) will visit Hong Kong to attend an award presentation dinner at the invitation of the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA), his office confirmed Wednesday.
Ma will attend the 2016 Award for Editorial Excellence dinner, sponsored by the SOPA, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre June 15, and will deliver a speech in English to share his views on cross-Taiwan Strait relations and the East Asian situation, the office said.
The office said that Ma's visit will be open and transparent and that he will return to Taiwan that same day.
The SOPA, a non-profit organization set up in 1982 to uphold press freedom, holds the award presentation every year.
It said that this will be Ma's first overseas visit since stepping down as president May 20, and that he will share his views on cross-strait relations and a historic meeting between himself and Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平) in Singapore in November 2015, as well as the tension in the South China Sea.
