Taipei, May 31 (CNA) A 28-year-old man in Keelung allegedly fatally stabbed his mother before falling from the rooftop of their apartment building, with both later pronounced dead in hospital, police said Sunday.
The incident occurred Saturday evening at the family's apartment in Keelung's Qidu District, according to police.
Police said the man became upset after learning that his 59-year-old mother had bought a gray windbreaker for his older brother but not for him, sparking an argument that escalated into a physical confrontation.
During the dispute, the man allegedly strangled his mother and attacked her with a kitchen knife, inflicting multiple wounds to her neck, abdomen and hands.
He then reportedly went to the rooftop of the 12-story building and jumped, striking a first-floor awning before landing on the ground.
The victim's older son witnessed the incident and alerted his father, who returned home and found the suspect still showing signs of life, police said.
Emergency responders later found the woman lying on a balcony inside the apartment. Both were taken to Keelung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, where they were pronounced dead despite resuscitation efforts.
Police secured the scene and collected evidence, while prosecutors and forensic examiners conducted autopsies Sunday to determine the exact causes of death.
According to police, the man had a history of disputes with his mother.
Neighbors said the family of four had lived in the building for more than a decade and described the parents as friendly and courteous. They said they were unaware of any serious family conflicts and were shocked by the incident.
