Taipei, June 28 (CNA) Four people were arrested in Taiwan recently in connection with a shipment of 24 kilograms of marijuana into the country, police said Thursday.

The shipment of drugs arrived at Keelung Port on June 8 and was later transferred to a container terminal in Xizhi District, New Taipei, according to a unit of the Third Special Police Corps under the National Police Agency.

The shipment was declared to Customs as 18 cartons of miscellaneous goods from Canada but upon inspection was found to be 62 airtight food containers, each containing 350 to 400 grams of marijuana, police said.

On June 13, police said, they arrested a man surnamed Hsueh, who turned up to collect the shipment.

Police said they also arrested a married couple and another suspect, identified by the surname Chang, who were believed to have been involved in the shipment of the marijuana from Canada to Taiwan.

A search of Chang's residence in Taipei turned up a sum of NT$1.9 million, which has been confiscated, police said.

The four suspects have been turned over to the Shilin District Prosecutors Office for further interrogation, police said.

According to police, 24 kg of marijuana could make an estimated 600,000 joints.
