Taipei, June 28 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) has issued a heavy rain alert for 14 cities and counties in Taiwan, warning residents of rainfall in excess of 40 millimeters over a one-hour period on Thursday afternoon.

The alert extends to the cities of New Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Chiayi, Kaohsiung and Tainan, as well as the counties of Yilan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Changhua, Nantou, Yunlin, Chiayi and Pingtung.

Due to a powerful air convection current, the areas listed in the alert can expect heavy rains, strong wind gusts and lightning strikes, the CWB said.

Meanwhile, in Taipei, the temperature soared to 37.8 degrees Celsius at 1:26 p.m. Thursday, the second highest ever for the month of June in the city.

The highest temperature registered in Taipei in June was in 2016, when the mercury shot up to 38.7 degrees, according to CWB data.
