Premier names new finance minister

2012/05/31 12:58:41

Taipei, May 31 (CNA) Premier Sean Chen has named former Deputy Finance Minister Chang Sheng-ford as the new head of the Ministry of Finance, Cabinet spokesman Hu Yu-wei said Thursday.

The appointment is pending approval by President Ma Ying-jeou, Hu said at a news conference.

The new appointment came two days after Christina Liu resigned as finance minister over wide differences between her proposal for a capital gains tax on stock transactions and a separate version worked out by ruling Kuomintang legislators.

The 63 year-old Chang, who has spent more than 30 years in the Finance Ministry, is an expert in tax affairs, according to a statement released by the Cabinet.

Chang, who retired as deputy finance minister in February, is currently an associate professor at Kainan University and at National Taiwan University.
