Taipei, Aug. 17 (CNA) The government's statistics bureau has raised its forecast for Taiwan's gross domestic product (GDP) growth in 2018 to 2.69 percent, 0.09 percentage points higher than its previous estimate released in May.

The upward revision was based on unexpectedly strong demand for semiconductors in new technological applications such as automotive electronics, high-performance computing, and the internet of things, the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said Friday when it made the upward revision.

Other factors will weigh against Taiwan's growth, however, the DGBAS said, including a slowdown in the global economy, high oil prices and the trade dispute between the United States and China.
