Taipei, Aug. 30 (CNA) The agricultural sector is reeling from the damage caused by two tropical storms that battered Taiwan within a week, causing losses of over NT$315 million (US$10.54 million), the Council of Agriculture (COA) said Friday.
The council estimated that damage to crops, livestock and farming facilities had reached NT$315.19 million as of 5 p.m. that day, as advisories for heavy rain remained in place for central and southern Taiwan.
Tropical Storm Trami made its way through Taiwan Aug. 21, followed a week later by Kong-Rey Aug. 28, which brought heavy rain despite not making landfall.
Chiayi County saw the greatest losses at over NT$134.81 million, followed by Yunlin County at NT$80.28 million.
Kong-Rey dumped over 500 mm of rain across the south of the country Thursday, causing widespread flooding in some districts and landslides in mountainous regions.
