Taipei, April 28 (CNA) Quanta Computer Inc., the world's largest notebook computer ODM service provider, expects its notebook computer shipments for the second quarter of this year will rise 5-10 percent from a quarter earlier.
At an investor conference held Friday, Quanta Chairman Barry Lam said on the back of a launch of new models, which is expected to start from May, demand is likely to accelerate accordingly.
Although the world's economy remains overshadowed by lingering uncertainty, Lam said, no fresh crisis has emerged yet to impose further impact on the economic fundamentals.
He added, therefore, Quanta remains upbeat that the global market will grow steadily with new notebook computer models scheduled to be unveiled.
Lam said without new products to stimulate buying interest, shipments in April are likely to fall from May, but for the entire second quarter, Quanta is expected to enjoy 5-10 percent sequential growth in shipments.
According to the company, shipments for April are expected to fall 10-20 percent from March, but the monthly figure is likely to recover in May and the momentum is expected to continue into the second half of this year.
Quanta Vice Chairman C.C. Leung agreed, saying the anticipated higher shipments in the second quarter are expected to boost the scale of economies and eventually improve the company's gross margin.
In the first quarter, Quanta's gross margin fell to 4.2 percent from 4.6 percent recorded for the fourth quarter of last year largely in reflection of a change in product mix and a rising Taiwan dollar.
In the past three months, Quanta posted NT$5.1 billion (US$174 million) in net profit, down 21.9 percent from a quarter earlier and also down 10.7 percent from a year earlier.
Its earnings per share for the first quarter stood at NT$1.33, compared with NT$1.71 recorded in the fourth quarter, while sales fell 21.4 percent quarter-on-quarter to NT$236.2 billion.
Meanwhile, Leung said the company's shipments of tablet computers for 2012 are expected to rise about 70 percent from a year earlier on increasing orders from customers as the global demand is on the rise.
The market has anticipated Quanta's tablet shipments will total about 7 million units for 2012.
