Taipei, Sept. 20 (CNA) Taiwan was the runner-up in the 2015 Asian Baseball Championship after beating Japan 3-1 Sunday in its first win against the archrival in 14 years.

South Korea won the championship early after beating all of its five opponents in the six-nation tournament. Both Japan and Taiwan lost their game against South Korea in a single round-robin schedule.

In Sunday's final game to decide the second-place team, Taiwan took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth thanks to two hits and two walks, only for the Japanese to make it even in the seventh, when relief pitcher Chen Pin-hsue allowed a run that began with a walk followed by a wild pitch and a hit.

Su Chih-chieh retook the lead for Taiwan in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer and the home team players added another run in the eighth after the bases were loaded.

Japan's last chance to come back ended in the ninth with two strikeouts and a fly out, giving Taiwan its first win against the Asian baseball powerhouse in the championship since 2001.

The 27th Asian Baseball Championship was held in Taichung September 16-20.
