Low turnout blunts nuclear referendum momentum

After a referendum seeking people’s consent on “safely” restarting the Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant failed to pass, experts said the major opposition party Kuomintang (KMT) did not do much to support the measure, initiated by the smaller Taiwan People’s Party. They also attributed the lack of public interest to shifting attitudes toward nuclear energy within the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
