Taipei, Nov. 4 (CNA) A heavy rain alert was issued for parts of northern Taiwan on Tuesday due to ongoing seasonal northeasterly winds and cloud cover moving in from southern China, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).

The CWA said a heavy rain advisory, indicating at least 80 millimeters of rain in 24 hours or 40 millimeters in one hour, has been issued for Keelung, Taipei and New Taipei cities and will stay in effect through Tuesday night.

The CWA warned of possible landslides in mountainous areas in these cities caused by heavy downpours.

Elsewhere, the CWA said the weather is expected to be stable with only brief showers possible in Taoyuan City and Hsinchu and Miaoli counties in the north, Hualien County in the east, and mountainous regions in central Taiwan.

Partly cloudy and sunny skies are expected to prevail in southern Taiwan despite occasional showers, the CWA said.

Due to the seasonal winds, northern Taiwan is expected to experience cooler weather Tuesday, with temperatures forecast to hit 19-25 degrees Celsius during the day.

Daytime temperatures in central and southern Taiwan, where the seasonal winds will have less of an impact, are expected to range between 28 and 31 degrees before falling to 21-23 degrees at night, the CWA said.

Strong winds are expected in Keelung and northern coastal areas and Tainan and the Hengchun Peninsula in the south, the CWA said.

The CWA said the eye of the latest Western Pacific storm, Typhoon Kalmaegi, was located 1,310 kilometers south-southeast of Cape Eluanpi, Taiwan's southernmost point, as of 2 a.m. Tuesday.

It is currently forecast to move through the central Philippines and then head toward the Spratly Islands and Vietnam, the CWA said, adding that it was unlikely to directly affect Taiwan.
