Magnitude 5.3 earthquake shakes eastern Taiwan

Taipei, Oct. 18 (CNA) A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck off Taiwan's east coast at 10:04 a.m. Saturday, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).

The epicenter of the temblor was located in the sea, about 56.9 kilometers east northeast of Hualien County Hall, at a depth of 14.3 km, CWA data showed.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

The earthquake's intensity, which gauges the actual effects of a temblor, was highest in parts of Yilan County and Hualien County, where it measured 3 on Taiwan's seven-tier intensity scale.

It also measured 2 in Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Hsinchu County and Nantou County.
