Taipei, April 2 (CNA) After more than 10 years of construction, Hushan Reservoir in Yunlin County finally started storing water Saturday.
Presiding over a ceremony in which the sluice gate was closed, President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) said the government began planning the reservoir as early as 1979, but the project was not approved by the Cabinet until 2001.
Over the past 15 years, however, the reservoir's construction has been delayed three times due to environmental and historical site preservation issues, he said.
The president praised the reservoir as being constructed with attention paid to ecological conservation. He also said its beautiful environment also makes it a suitable location for jogging and cycling.
According to Water Resources Agency Director-General Wang Ruey-der (王瑞德), the reservoir has a capacity of 52.18 million cubic meters and will store water in three stages.
He said the reservoir will begin to supply water in July, and predicted that it will take another 12-18 months before it will be operating at full capacity.
