Taipei, June 10 (CNA) Taiwan's broadcasting regulator on Wednesday advised that AI-generated content in news reporting should be clearly and consistently disclosed, as part of its guidance on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in broadcast media.
The National Communications Commission (NCC) issued the guidance in line with the Artificial Intelligence Act, which came into effect on Jan. 14, and requires regulators to assist industries with developing guidance based on AI risk management needs.
The NCC said the guidelines, developed with inputs from experts and industry stakeholders, are "administrative guidance" intended to serve as a reference for self-regulation by broadcast media in using AI technology in news production.
News programs that involve the adoption of AI-generated content should prominently disclose such use throughout the production, the NCC said.
If third-party AI-generated audio-visual materials are used, the source of the content should also be properly attributed, it added.
The guidelines also call for compliance with laws and regulations, protection of human rights, fairness, and the establishment of content verification mechanisms in the use of AI, according to the NCC's news release.
When using AI-generated content in reporting disasters or other events, highly realistic depictions should be avoided, and instead animations, illustrations, or sketches should be used to help audiences clearly distinguish the material and avoid confusion, the NCC said.
