Taipei, Nov. 5 (CNA) A Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) panel on Wednesday selected Legislator Su Chiao-hui (蘇巧慧) as the party's 2026 nominee in the New Taipei City mayoral election, pending final approval by the party's Central Executive Committee.
Su, 49, is the daughter of former Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌), and has represented a New Taipei-based district in the Legislature since 2016.
Her selection, by the DPP nominations committee, would see her run in the longtime Kuomintang (KMT) stronghold, where incumbent Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) will leave office after two terms.
The KMT has yet to announce its nominee in the city, while Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌), chairman of the smaller Taiwan People's Party (TPP), has said multiple times that he intends to run for mayor.
New Taipei is Taiwan's most populous municipality, with over 4 million residents.
The KMT has held the city's mayorship since 2005, when it was still known as Taipei County.
Before that, You Qing (尤清) and Su Tseng-chang of the DPP served as county magistrate from 1989 to 1997 and 1997 to 2004, respectively.
Taiwan will hold its next local elections on Nov. 28, 2026.
