Taipei, June 18 (CNA) President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Wednesday expressed gratitude to the leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) members for their support of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and their concerns about China's destabilizing activities in the region.
The G7 summit wrapped up in Kananaskis, Alberta in Canada Tuesday with a chair's summary in which leaders discussed their concerns about China's destabilizing activities in the East and South China Seas and the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
In response, Lai posted a message on the social media platform X, expressing his appreciation to G7 leaders for their support and concerns.
He affirmed that Taiwan will continue to collaborate with like-minded international partners to counter China's coercion and deepen economic connections to ensure regional peace and prosperity.
In addition, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) also expressed gratitude to G7 leaders and noted that their statement reflects a growing international consensus on the importance of safeguarding peace in the Taiwan Strait.
In a press release issued Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said that the G7 Chair's Summary highlighted their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific based on the rule of law and their concerns about China's industrial policies leading to global market distortions and harmful overcapacity.
The MOFA said in the press release that Lin sincerely thanked the G7 members for once again expressing their support for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, following the joint statements issued by G7 foreign ministers in March and April.
Lin noted this demonstrates that maintaining peace and stability across the strait has become an international consensus and maintaining the status quo in the strait is indispensable to global security and prosperity.
As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will continue to work hand in hand with global partners to safeguard a free and open Indo-Pacific, Lin said in the statement.
