A statue of the sea goddess Mazu is carried aloft at the Nanyao Temple in Changhua County on Sunday, at the start of an annual 300-kilometer pilgrimage. Over the seven-day parade, the pilgrims will stop at Bengang Tianhou Temple in Chiayi County then go onward to Hsin Kang Feng Tien Temple in the same county for an early celebration of the sea goddess' birthday, which falls on May 12 this year.
