Hon Hai green energy usage ratio tops 67% in 2024, well ahead of schedule
Taipei, Sept. 2 (CNA) The renewable energy usage ratio of Taiwan-based manufacturing giant Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. rose to 67.38 percent in 2024, well ahead of the company's goal of achieving a usage ratio of more than 50 percent by 2030, according to its latest annual sustainability report.
In the report, which was released at the end of August, the iPhone assembler said it is committed to using green energy to further improve its usage ratio. It will continue to push its plants around the world to use 100 percent green energy by 2040 and reach net zero emissions by 2050.
Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn globally, said that it has diversified channels in place to buy renewable energy and increase purchases each year to make up the shortfall from self-produced green power.
As a result, Hon Hai has signed long term power purchase agreements in many locations, it said.
Hon Hai said that in 2024, the company directly purchased 1,396.82GWh in green power, while buying an additional 4,996.35GWH in renewable power from certified enterprises in Taiwan through the National Renewable Energy Certification Center (T-RECC), which has issued certificates to enterprise power producers since 2017.
In terms of self-developed green energy, Hon Hai said, its total installed renewable energy capacity reached 332.90MW in 2024, up 2.17 percent from a year earlier.
Hon Hai added that it has adopted solar power generation systems by building rooftop and ground green energy stations at production sites in China, India and Vietnam.
Last year, Hon Hai completed carbon footprint verification for 200 of its suppliers, cutting 1.02 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), while 36 of its suppliers committed to using green energy and consumed a total of 169 million kWh in renewable energy power, helping to reduce carbon emissions by about 96,000 tons last year, the company said.
Hon Hai said it plans to persuade 54 of its suppliers to use 100 percent renewable energy to manufacture products for the company by the end of this year and expand that number to 150 by 2030 and more than 300 by 2050.
According to Hon Hai, the company has 233 plants and offices in 24 countries around the world, including China, the United States, India and Europe.
