Taiwan sees slight increase in birth rate in 2015

Taipei, Sept. 5 (CNA) A total of 136,935 babies were born in Taiwan from January to August this year, a 3.37 percent increase on the same period last year, according to the latest statistics compiled by the Ministry of the Interior.

A total of 16,836 babies were born in August, an increase of 270, or 1.63 percent year-on-year, the figures show, which also means a baby was born every 2.7 minutes, the ministry said in its latest monthly report on national demographic changes.

That brought the total number of newborns for January to August to 136,935, which was 4,465 more than the same period in 2014, the ministry added.

As of the end of August, the population of Taiwan was 23,465,003, which is 60,760 more than in the same month last year, according to the ministry's statistics.
